The deep impact mission was a success, but few realize
that the mission had military objectives also. The
military has a few scientific military missions in
each launch of a rocket, and sends up their own every
few months. They admit that, btw. The deep impact
mission has great scientific value, but it also tests
out a theory presented as an option for Star Wars
Defense Systems. The idea of impacting a heavy metal
object against an ICBM was long a proposal for the
Star Wars DS. While this doesn't mean they can
actually set up a DS based upon interception and
destruction of missiles by impact objects, it is a
major first step. It proves that an object can be
guided accurately enough to hit a relatively small
object with another object at relativistic speeds.
It's long been a subject of Sci Fi stories and they
have the highest percentage of successful predictions
of all prophecies, way higher than religious
prophecies.

Now, somebody tell me it's just a conspiracy theory. grin.
